Lindsay Lohan has been arrested for driving under the influence in Beverley Hills, police have said.

The actress's Mercedes was involved in a single-car traffic accident and she was admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to the Beverly Hills Police Department.

Lt Mitch McCann said the star could face further charges, after a substance suspected of being cocaine was found in the car.

He said: "Officers tracked Miss Lohan to the local hospital where she was ultimately placed under arrest for 23152 avc driving under the influence.

"Due to the fact that Miss Lohan was admitted to the hospital for her injuries she was subsequently cited and released on this misdemeanour charge."

The 20-year-old, who reportedly admitted herself into rehab in January, was given a citation and a court date, which was not known. The legal age for drinking in the US is 21.

Her latest antics has led to her father appealing for her to curb her partying.

Her estranged dad Michael, 47, is quoted in a newspaper as saying: "This could get her the help she needs.

"Her lawyers, assistants, publicists, even some of her so-called friends seem to tag along and reap the rewards of Lindsay without any concern about what direction her life is going in.

"Lindsay needs to clean house and start all over again with the people with her in the beginning - her family."
