Swedish film-maker Ingmar Bergman has died aged 89.

The legendary director died peacefully at his home on Faro Island in the southeast of Sweden, according to his daughter Eva Bergman.

Bergman was famous for films such as Wild Strawberries and The Seventh Seal, which helped carve him out as a master of modern cinema.

The arthouse film-maker won three Oscars for best foreign language films in 1960, 1961 and 1983, and a collection of his work was last month added to the UNESCO store of history's greatest archives.

Bergman was married five times, most recently to Ingrid von Rosen.
