Haneef wants job back in Australia

An Indian doctor who was freed in Australia when terror charges were dropped against him wants to return to his job in the country. Many of his native Indians supported Mohamed Haneef, claiming his arrest was racially motivated, and he returned to his homeland to a hero's welcome. At a press conference, the 27-year-old doctor indicated his preference to return to his work at Australia's Gold Coast Hospital. The hospital said his job is waiting for him if he could get his visa back. Dr Haneef said: "I would like to return to Australia and I would want my visa back. I would fight for that." He was charged with providing reckless support to a terrorist organisation - following the foiled attacks in London and Glasgow - because he gave his cell phone SIM card to one of his second cousins, Sabeel Ahmed, when he left Britain in July last year. The doctor was allowed to return home after Australia's top prosecutor on Friday dropped the charge because of a lack of evidence. Australian Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews said Dr Haneef was free to leave the country following his release from jail, but that his work visa remained cancelled. Dr Haneef's Australian lawyer, Peter Russo, said he planned to appeal the decision to strip him of his visa. Dr Haneef said he did not expect an apology from the Australian authorities, after the country's prime minister said his government would not apologise. "I don't expect any apologies from the Australian authorities or government, but they should apologise to this peace loving country here and its citizens," he said. Dr Haneef had been arrested on July 2 at an airport in Brisbane as he was about to fly to India to see his wife and newborn daughter. Dr Haneef indicated that he may choose to sue the Australian government over his detention, but that no decision had been made yet.
