India claim sweet seven-wicket win
1.28, Tue Jul 31 2007
India have struck first blood in the series against England after claiming an emphatic seven-wicket victory in the second Test. Despite Chris Tremlett's best efforts at Trent Bridge, the tourists comfortably eased to their victory target, reaching 73-3 inside 25 overs. Resuming on their overnight score of 10-0, India soon polished off the runs despite Hampshire seamer Tremlett claiming the wickets of Wasim Jaffer (22), Dinesh Karthik (22) and Sachin Tendulkar (1). Captain Rahul Dravid (11 not out) and Sourav Ganguly (2 not out) administered the final rites as India recorded only their fifth-ever Test victory on English soil ahead of next week's third and final Test at The Oval. The match has been overshadowed by a series of angry confrontations between the two sides, with India's nine-wicket hero, man-of-the-match Zaheer Khan, accusing England of "insulting" behaviour as jelly beans were thrown on to the wicket as he batted. Seamer Shanthakumaran Sreesanth was fined 50 per cent of his match fee after barging into Michael Vaughan, who has denied his side "crossed the line" of acceptable behaviour. Vaughan said: "What's been great is that they (the two Tests with India) have been tough and that's what people want to see. "There have been a couple of times when it's gone over the top but that's what you want in Test cricket. I don't think the line has been crossed yet." The England captain's opposite number Dravid, meanwhile, thought players on both sides had come close to crossing the line, telling reporters: "If it was not crossed we were close to it in some cases. "But it is a tough Test match between two close teams trying to win. I don't think at any stage it got very bad." Vaughan is adamant that England can bounce back at The Oval to keep intact his record of having never captained his country to a home Test series defeat. He added: "I am very confident that if we continue to play good cricket we can produce a performance at The Oval which makes sure we level the series."
